The inspector will inspect the range/oven by operating all of the controls for the burners, and bake/broil operation. The inspector will also check for any damaged door gaskets or rusted out interior cases. One of the most important things to check for is an Anti-Tip bracket pictured below. This bracket is designed to prevent the range from tipping over if the door is opened and a heavy object is placed on the door. Several have commented to me that it is a "minor" item and not important. Although it is a minor item, in cost and size, and in most cases can be obtained from the manufacturer for free, it is important.
There have also been several lawsuits regarding this device as well as injuries and even death.
From the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission:
Average of 22 deaths per year;
Range hood fan
The inspector will operate the range hood fan.
The inspector will take temperature reading from both the refrigerator and freezer. The refrigerator should be operating no higher than 40 degrees according to the USDA.
The inspector will run the dishwasher through a normal cycle. The inspector will check for leaks and for the presence of proper drainage, including the air gap or "high loop".
The inspector will run the washing machine through a complete cycle, check the hot and cold connections, check for restrictions in the water flow, and check the spin cycle safety switch.
The inspector will run the dryer through a complete cycle, check the interior operating temperature and check for proper termination piping and exit.
